High Speed Analysis

High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has a very broad field of application, which typically includes pharmaceuticals, food, flavours, natural products, environmental contaminants and polymers, analysed in a wide variety of samples. It is one of the dominant analytical techniques in all phases of drug development and manufacturing, including the initial bioanalysis during discovery liquid chromatographic-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LCMS/ MS), impurity profiling, product characterisation, in-process quality monitoring and the final quality checks of the end product.

HPLC is based on the separation of a sample into its constituents by passing it with a flow of liquid (the ‘mobile phase’) through a column filled with sorbent particles (the ‘stationary phase’). Different compounds interact differently with the stationary phase, and are retained to a different extent, causing the compounds to separate. Since the mid- 1980s, reliable HPLC instrumentation has been available that separates complex mixtures, typically on 25cm columns packed with 5μm particles and using a pumping system with a capacity of up to 5,000psi/400 bar at flow rates of 0.5 to 10ml per minute. Using this set-up, countless successful methods were developed and have been used for numerous applications.

Erik Baltussen obtained his Master’s degree in Chemistry at the Eindhoven University of Technology in 1996 which was followed by a PhD at the same university in the group of Carl Cramers (Instrumental Analysis). For that he joined the research groups of Pat Sandra at the University of Gent, Belgium, and at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Erik’s thesis was decorated with the Kolthoff Award by the Royal Dutch Chemical Society in 1999. After a research position at the Delft University, Erik joined NOTOX in 2001, where he is currently Head of the Section of Analytical and Physical Chemistry.

Theo Noij received his Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry at the Eindhoven University of Technology in 1982. He worked as a Research Associate in the area of trace analysis by gas chromatography, and obtained his doctorate in 1987. Theo then joined Kiwa Water Research in the Netherlands for several functions in water quality research. He represented the Netherlands’ Waterworks in various national and international committees. In 2004, Theo joined NOTOX as Head of Chemistry, responsible for the general management, organisation and scientific output of the Chemistry Department.
