Ukraine: Economic Incentives and Logistical Solutions

The global financial crisis has influenced all economic spheres, with the pharmaceutical industry and the field of clinical trials being no exception. It is well known though, that a crisis signifies new economic conditions that lead not just to threats, but also to opportunities. In particular, for medical and pharmaceutical companies, it is a good time to analyse expenses and seek possible methods of optimisation. This article suggests ways to cut laboratory expenses, with a focus on clinical trials in Ukraine.

The number of international multicentre clinical trials involving Ukrainian sites has increased significantly over the last few years. At the beginning of 2009, there were 408 active international clinical trials taking place in the country. The acute issue is the organisation of laboratory protocol for trials being conducted in Ukraine. In multicentre clinical trials, this part is usually provided by the central laboratory, as it has the advantages of more modern equipment, bigger and better quality facilities, and the ability to compare the results of samples obtained at different sites.

The use of a central lab facilitates the sponsor’s monitoring procedure, as well as authorised inspections. The disadvantage of the central lab is that it may be located at some distance from certain sites. This complicates delivery of specimens and increases shipment expenses, raising the cost of this stage of the trial. The distance of the central lab also increases the turnaround time (TAT), thus adding to difficulties in organisation when the investigator must receive reports within 24 to 36 hours.
