EPC: What is barcode labelling and how is it currently utilised in pharma?

Laura Johnson: Barcode labelling is central to a range of mission-critical enterprise operations, including production and distribution; supply chain traceability, management and control; and final delivery. Each organisation has its own unique set of business processes and considerations that must be accommodated.

Barcodes are especially important in the pharmaceutical space, where they are currently used to identify the batch or lot for products travelling through the supply chain. In November 2015, the FDA issued final guidance for the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA), detailing the use of 2D barcodes for consumer safety.
