The latest figures available from the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry put the value of UK pharmaceutical exports at £5.5 billion, making it one of the country's biggest international trade success stories and putting pharmaceutical exports at the heart of the knowledge-based economy. Furthermore, five of the world's top 20 medicines were developed in British laboratories.Nevertheless, whilst the worldwide health care market continues to soar, established pharmaceutical manufacturers face challenges on all fronts. The past is no longer a guide for the future, and blockbuster products are increasingly more difficult and costly to find. So what are these fundamental changes that are currently reshaping the pharmaceutical industry? Change is never from one source but comes about when a variety of factors begin to emerge.
