Encounters in Transportation

Supply chain logistics experts understand that the transportation of any type of goods comes with their own set of challenges. When cold chain logistics are taken into account, a new set of unique obstacles are introduced.

To start, the cold chain market is growing. According to Qy Research Groups’ Global Cold Chain Logistics Market Size, Status and Forecast 2022 report, the global cold chain market is expected to reach US $426.2 billion by 2022. Pharmaceutical Commerce reported that cold chain logistics spending is forecast to grow to more than US $16 billion by 2020. Data points back to the rising demand for pharmaceuticals as one of the main factors driving demand for the temperature-controlled supply chain. This demand also stems from an aging population, which, in turn, is starting to require more medication, which must stay at specified temperatures.

By 2050, 16% of the world’s population will be 65 or older. Baby Boomers started turning 65 in 2011, and the American Hospital Association projects that by 2030, more than 60% of this generation will be managing more than one chronic condition. Additionally, Milliman reports that increased life expectancies will trigger greater consumption patterns in the population for medical services and pharmaceuticals.
