Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Packing Sourcer

Scandinavian Sciences

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the major industries in Scandinavia, particularly in Denmark and Sweden. These two countries are home to the Medicon Valley and the Danish biotechnology sector. The cluster spans the eastern part of Denmark, including Copenhagen, and the south-western part of Sweden and is connected via the Řresund Bridge. As one of Europe’s top three pharma and biotech clusters (alongside Cambridge in the UK and Basel in Switzerland), it is no wonder Medicon Valley attracts a constant stream of researchers and investors.

The Danish pharma industry is known worldwide for providing quality drugs and other medical products and is also a key sector of the local economy, employing about 20,000 people; this is the same for the pharma industry and its suppliers in neighbouring Sweden (1). Including indirect employment, the pharma industry in Denmark provides up to 70,000 jobs, with 300 pharma-related companies established in the region (2). Major international companies with research centres in the area include Novo Nordisk, Baxter, Lundbeck, LEO Pharma, HemoCue, and Ferring Pharmaceuticals. Measured by the number of employees relative to the size of the population, Denmark has the second largest pharma industry in the world. In 2012, Denmark was the eighth largest producer of pharmaceutical products in the EU, accounting for 4.1% of the total EU production (3).
