The Hygiene Regime





Changing rooms have a vital role to play both as a hygienic scene setter and the last line of defence before staff enter the sterile environment. The layout and gowning procedures should take staff on a logical (when carefully crafted) journey towards the cleanroom.

As well as the practicality of reducing the risk of contamination, the gowning ritual is designed to engender a hygienic mindset. Consequently, the procedure must be a highly ordered linear sequence that prepares the body and mind for the working day.

The first step can be viewed as both practical and symbolic – removing the vestiges of the outside world, the personal effects, and valuables. If the space lends itself, it’s worth considering installing sticky tack mats at the entrance and the first step-over benches at this stage. Although these may seem minor form factors, they set a physical and psychological threshold that staff need to cross, which separates the ‘dirty’ outside world from the ‘clean’ gowning area.
