Almost 12.7 million new cancer cases were detected in 2008. The figure could be as many as 21.4 million by the year 2030, according to the WHO report. This is a growing public health problem calling for means and infrastructures to address the challenges of the future. Belgium is at the forefront of nuclear medicine thanks to its research and many infrastructures. By way of example, over 30 million radioisotope 99mTc examinations are carried out worldwide every year, and Belgian production accounts for 6 million of them.
