Why the NHS Needs Integration

It happens and we may as well admit it: sometimes records go missing - whole sets of notes and information on a patient and their ailments. The likelihood of this happening is increased if a patient is under the care of more than one clinical specialist. Combine this with community care and the current system of tracking a patient's records increases the probability of these records being incomplete or unavailable.

The new NHS initiative - Delivering 21st Century IT Support for the NHS - will provide the structure and support for a brave new world. This initiative will seek to combine best practice experiences of blue chip companies such as BP, with experience from health services across the world. By seeking to understand how global companies integrate their customer and supplier activities, the NHS should finally arrive at a solution that will cater for the NHS in the 21st Century.

Some may ask: what parallels can possibly be drawn from the private sector - the NHS is unique, it delivers free care to patients, not new cars. The key is in looking at how global companies integrate their customer records for use by other parts of the organisation and its suppliers. Imagine a car company which has a sophisticated customer relationship management (CRM) system, integrated with a company's supply chain management (SCM) system and credit checking system.
