Supply Chain in Clinical Trials

Competitive pressures are forcing pharmaceutical companies to carefully examine the process of drug development. To satisfy shareholders' expectations and survive independently, the modern pharmaceutical company must bring more revenue-generating drugs to market while significantly controlling costs. To meet the challenge, the time is ripe for the clinical trials industry to apply the latest techniques of supply chain or value chain management to the handling of clinical research data.

Supply chain principles, long appreciated by the manufacturing sector, have typically centred on the building of meaningful collaborations among partners and internal groups. More recently, the focus of supply chain implementation has been on electronic solutions to enhance results along the production route that starts with upstream suppliers and extends downstream to completed products and services offered to customers.

Sound planning and management of these steps improves information flow and offers a degree of organisation, consistency and purpose to an otherwise chaotic and unsystematic way of getting things done. Improving the process creates competitive advantage by focusing more resources on producing a better product, faster, and with less waste on the special interests of existing functional silos along the way.
