The DIA Euromeeting, held at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Rome, was attended by almost 2,000 delegates, speakers and exhibitors. Visitors came from 40 countries to take part in tutorials, technical tracks and a plenary session graced by Sir James Black - the doyen of drug discoverers and Nobel Prize winner. As ever, there was very strong representation from regulatory authorities - global, regional and national.
The theme of the meeting was 'e-ternal medical progress'. A large number of exhibitors demonstrated IT-related products and services and the e-R&D track updated the participants in the latest advances. We found it a challenge to choose which of the tracks to attend; however we felt that the balance between duration and content was perfect.
Plenary Session
Sir James Black gave the keynote speech in the plenary session. He gave an interesting history of drug discovery and development, dating the start of true medicinal research to William Perkin's attempt to synthesise quinine in 1856. Sir James also cited Paul Erlich and Paul Janssen as pioneers of modern drug research. He then discussed seven prerequisites for a drug development strategy. Five of these relate to the drug itself:
