SMOs - Creating a New Outsourcing Strategy for Japanese Pharmaceutical Companies

Japanese pharmaceutical companies wishing to conduct clinical research in Europe typically use contract research organisations (CROs), particularly those that offer 'full service' capabilities. Historically, this has been due to the fundamental fact that there is no alternative. Although some representative companies have sizeable clinical and regulatory departments, the majority of Japanese operations based in the UK or other European locations have a very small number of staff.

As a result, most global or multinational CROs have expended considerable effort in pursuing the attractive prospect of full service Japanese contracts, often in the hope that these will grow from single studies to full development programmes. In the very recent past, this has led to vigorous and expensive investment in operations and offices directly in Japan. This has been partly with a view to expanding their scope of work directly in the East, but also to improve the flow of projects and communications to their Western bases. Similarly, Japanese companies - wherever they are located - spend a considerable amount of time and resources debating and assessing the various strengths of the major CROs in performing certain studies.
