| Several major pharmaceutical companies have ended up in trouble because of the
involvement (or even the suspicion of involvement) of their employees or agents
abroad in bribery. This article looks at why bribery is a particular problem for the
industry; gives examples of where things have gone wrong; describes the risks
involved; and suggests ways of minimising exposure.
A GLOBAL PROBLEM
Bribery and corruption are global problems, affecting all
industries. At their July 2008 summit, the G8 states recorded:
“No country – its government or its private sector – is immune
from corruption. This corrosive activity poses serious governance
challenges and threats to the stability and security of societies,
undermines the institutions and values of democracy, and
jeopardises sustainable development and economic prosperity.
Corruption also impedes global efforts to combat international
crime and terrorism.” |
