THE IMPROPER USE OF INFORMATION
Companies are awash with information, yet short on the tools, methods and talent for using it. Information about all facets of business is gathered but not sufficiently analysed, reported but not understood, and therefore not acted upon.
There are exceptions in areas such as customer information or production processes, but the R&D development process in the life sciences industry clearly lacks analytical tools that support business decisions in an environment that has to deal with budget constraints and a high chance of failure.
This has resulted in the now well-known statement that ‘it takes $1 billion to develop and commercialise a new drug’. Obviously this amount is inclusive of all research projects that have been aborted at some point in their development life, but the consequences of such a statement are great:
- It gives the impression that only very big companies with a lot of financial clout have the resources to develop new drugs
- It reinforces the already strong attitude towards creating increasingly bigger pharmaceutical companies that are, contrary to the a priori expectation, not necessarily more productive in the research environment
- Smaller biotech companies find it more difficult to attract money since the process of developing new drugs is deemed too risky
