The Leiden Bio Science Park is the leading life science cluster in the Netherlands and ranks among the top five most successful science parks in Europe. Currently it is home to over 60 medical and life science companies and features the largest number of biomedical startups on the continent. The stimulating business environment which the park provides has led innovative companies to settle there. It is also home to numerous smaller but promising startups which are on the brink of turning academic discoveries into innovative products. These companies benefit from the high standard of research carried out by Leiden University and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), both located at the park. By facilitating access to their knowledge and working closely with the industry, Leiden University and LUMC play a key role in the park’s success.
The Leiden Bio Science Park is located 30 minutes south of Amsterdam, and just 15 minutes away from Schiphol International Airport. Since it was established in 1984, the park grew from housing three companies to over 60 by April 2009. This increase was the result of attracting both Dutch and international companies, spin-offs and startups to the park.
In addition to commercial companies, the park houses several internationally renowned research institutes from Leiden University and LUMC. This combination of research and commercial organisations has enabled businesses to turn scientific discoveries into innovative products, and ensures that research is not only of an extremely high standard, but that it also has high clinical relevance. |
