Combined Efforts

There are several cell therapy companies in Wallonia that have developed cutting edge and breakthrough technologies and products in the field of regenerative medicines. These companies are all involved in clinical trials and two of them expect a market launch by early 2013.

The existing manufacturing infrastructure does not allow for these companies to produce the material required for their commercial application. They are therefore considering several options to secure the supply in time. The option that is described in this article consists of combining the efforts of each company to create one unique platform where all existing companies will have adequate production space and where newcomers can find production areas and support adapted to their needs.

Cell therapy is a promising biotechnology, in full development, for which many research programmes exist all over the world, but for which only a few products have made it through the clinics and have been commercialised. The years to come will see numerous development projects, clinical trials and product launches in the new field of regenerative medicine.

It is true that 2009 saw several serious drawbacks which reminded all of us that cell therapy, despite its acknowledged high medical potential, is not protected from the ups and downs that face each and every new technology.
