The Promise of Drug Discovery

EBR: What would you say the top priorities are for a drug discovery company?

Craig Fox: Discovering potential new drugs for diseases with high unmet medical need is a very difficult, risky, time consuming, and expensive challenge, but one that can reap tremendous rewards. To embark on such a challenge requires clear strategy and capability, enabling the company to be successful while mitigating the risks as best as possible.

There are two cornerstone objectives in any drug discovery programme; choosing the biology in the patient that will be perturbed (e.g., selecting the drug target) and then the means to generate and optimise molecules that can interact physiologically with this target that one day could be an approved drug. Wrapped around these two objectives is an investment and commercial strategy that will provide the means to fund the required experimental studies while providing an upside to investors funding this work, it should deliver significant value to patients and healthcare systems.
