Another Crisis Is Brewing

The US has poured billions of dollars into research for diagnostic tests, vaccines, and treatments for COVID-19, yet another crisis, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is here, and the lack of newer antibiotics due to severely underfunded research will contribute to more deaths due to bacterial infections worldwide.

Why Is AMR Important?

Bacterial infections, such as respiratory infections, are a serious complication secondary to COVID-19. The longer a patient is in the hospital, the higher the risk for a hospital-acquired infection from IV or peripherally inserted central catheter lines, nasogastric tubes, or ventilators; anything that enters the body is a risk for infection and bacterial resistance.

A 2016 report on antimicrobial resistance, funded by the UK, stated that: “at least 700,000 people die each year from drug-resistant infections, and that number will only grow if drug-resistant pathogens continue to proliferate faster than our supply of new innovative products to treat them. The report estimates that by 2050, 10 million lives will be lost each year at a cumulative cost to the global economy of $100 trillion – unless corrective steps are taken” (1).
