| With the sequencing of several mammalian genomes, the scientific focus has shifted towards an examination of how static genomes manage to support life in an ever-changing environment. Surprisingly, it is generally recognised that the number of genes does not relate to the genome size or the complexity of the organism. Humans have twice as many genes as C. elegans despite being a number of orders of magnitude more complex than organisms in many respects. Even more puzzling is the fact that we share an almost identical set of genes when compared with chimpanzees, yet our brain processes are much more complex than chimpanzees, a fact mainly attributed mainly to altered transcription control (1). |
