| While being prepared in the event of a chemical or bioweapons attack was hardly a new subject to the powers that be in the US Government, 9/11 and the subsequent anthrax-laced letter incidents did much to galvanise biodefence efforts. Since those dreadful events, several billions of dollars have been spent in the US to improve our infrastructures, fill out our stockpiles and create new diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics. Politics and sticky issues surrounding business tactics appear to be blocking progress, but at the same time advances in biotechnology are pointing the way to promising solutions. The question is this: can we figure out how to make it all work? |
