Protein Microarray Applications
With the advent of proteome studies - that is the global analysis of overall protein expression - protein microarrays are moving into the focus of interest. Sensitivity of detection is of primary importance in such studies; in the late eighties Ekins described "microspot assays" as being of exceptional detection sensitivity (1). Such a microspot approach has been used, for example, for creating antibody macroarrays for screening purposes on blotting membranes (2).
Over the last few years methods have been developed to produce DNA microarrays for genome research which also enable the creation of protein microarrays (protein chips) with thousands of spots on a small surface. Most recently, a number of experimental methods have been published delineating novel approaches for proteome research. Table 1 summarises a selection of very promising publications documenting the broad application range of protein microarrays.
