Funding and Mentoring Support for Medical Diagnostic Start-ups

Government has long recognised the expertise of UK researchers in generating novel diagnostic technologies but also acknowledges the great weakness in terms of support in order to transform these technologies into new products. It is seeking to remedy this position via organisations such as DiagnOx which support all stages of technology transfer from proof-of-principle through to development and growth of new companies. By drawing together the diagnostics community (researchers, small and large companies, investors and specialist service providers), through web-based membership services, the UK diagnostics sector, as a whole, can benefit from the interactions and business development that are generated.

Lisa Mynheer is Manager of DiagnOx, an initiative set up under the DTI's Biotechnology Exploitation Platform (BEP) Challenge to commercialise publicly funded diagnostics research in the UK. Her previous experience includes senior management positions at Serotec Ltd, where she established their antibody production facilities, and Oxford Bio-Innovation Ltd, a spin-out company from Oxford Brookes University that specialises in inhibin measurement. Lisa graduated in Combined Sciences from Leicester University and spent three years working in pathology research at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.
