Genes Direct - A Report from the Human Genetics Commission

When people think of genetic testing in a medical context, they will in all likelihood associate this with a visit to their GP or a referral by their GP to an NHS hospital. They would expect tests on their DNA to establish whether they are suffering from an inherited disorder or if they may develop symptoms in the future. All this could now be changing as some companies start to offer genetic tests outside the usual context of a medical consultation.

Philip Webb spent his early working years as a Laboratory Technician at Glaxo, before joining one of the world's largest medical diagnostics companies. After progressing through sales management into general management, Mr Webb joined ICI to set up a new genetic diagnostics business and was formerly General Manager of AstraZeneca Diagnostics.

As a member of the former Advisory Committee on Genetic Testing he worked on genetic tests sold direct to the public, prenatal diagnosis, paternity testing and jointly with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority on preimplantation genetic diagnosis. He now works as a Management Consultant in the health care industry and is a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Genetic Interest Group.
