Early Detection of Osteoporosis with b-Crosslaps

It is only over the last 25 years that osteoporosis, the most common bone metabolism disease, has been the subject of in-depth research. Osteoporosis (bone loss) is characterised by reduced bone mass and a disruption in the microarchitecture of the bone tissue. Healthy bone is in a state of constant turnover, the bone being broken down and reformed. This process is controlled by the sex hormones oestrogen and testosterone. If bone mass is to be preserved, a long-term balance must be maintained between bone formation (osteoblast activity) and bone breakdown or resorption (osteoclast activity). In osteoporosis this balance is disrupted and excessive loss of bone mass occurs, resulting in increased bone fragility and a greater susceptibility to fractures.
