The term 'cold chain' could be more accurately described as temperature-controlled shipping whether warm, cool or frozen. It has become one of the most significant phrases in the life sciences industry. 'Cold' refers to the need to control temperature during storage and distribution 'chain' stems from the legal concept of 'chain of custody' in which each segment of the processing, storage and transport of product is linked to the step before and after with proper documentation and records. Sue Lee has a background in Microbiology and has worked for World Courier for 14 years. As Manager of Biopharm Systems, Research and Development at World Courier in London, she oversees the logistics for multinational clinical trials controlled from the UK. Sue's other responsibilities at World Courier include the development of new and innovative systems for packaging, freezer facilities, training programmes and ongoing enhancement of the proprietary clinical trials database BioSTAR. She oversees quality and management of programmes, review and evaluation of relevant supplier services, providing consultation and technical expertise to shippers, sponsors, labs and World Courier working groups on training, biopharm shipping and dangerous goods. She is a qualified DSGA for road and rail, and IATA trained for shipping dangerous goods including radioactives, and is a member of the Institute of Freight Professionals (Grad). In addition she is approved by the CAA as a trainer for dangerous goods.
Sean Flanagan is the Commercial Director at Kryotrans Ltd. A qualified accountant, Sean has considerable financial and operational experience with a range of large and small organisations, such as United Technologies Corporation and PROTX Ltd, an Internet start-up company. He is one of three directors at Kryotrans Ltd. He is responsible for marketing, finance, sales and administration and has also developed a number of strategic partnering relationships.
