The conference was organised by Access Events International (www.bio-access-events.com) and was dedicated to manufacturing strategies for biological-based therapies, encompassing facilities design and build including an example of creating a 60,000L mammalian cell culture facility. This was followed by a number of sessions based around manufacturing applications and techniques. Professor Rolf Werner (Boehringer Ingelheim) opened the meeting with a thorough review of the industry, showing that the world biotech industry mammalian fermenter capacity in 2005 will reach 1.4 million L.
The investment in one bioreactor has now reached around €50 million, with a time frame of five years from ground break to process validation. The decision to manufacture or outsource is a key strategic decision and is driven by access to capital and risk attitudes. John Machulski of Lonza then gave a specific example of building a 60,000L facility. The challenges of bringing together multi-disciplinary teams for project planning, design, construction and validation were considerable and an organisation without these internal capabilities embark on these projects at their peril.
