The Future of Agricultural Biotechnology

World demand for transgenic seeds is projected to advance by 12 per cent annually to $3.8 billion in 2006. Arable land devoted to transgenic crops is expected to increase by 7.2 per cent per year to 184 million acres over the same period. Cultivation of transgenic crops will continue to be dominated by the United States, with Argentina, Canada and China generating the largest demand among other countries. Together, these four countries will account for nearly 85 per cent of total global transgenic seed sales in 2006. China, fuelled by external investment and government support, will generate the fastest growth among all agricultural biotechnology markets and will emerge as one of the most diversified producers of transgenic crops. Three crops - soybeans, corn and cotton - will continue to make up almost 90 per cent of global demand for genetically modified (GM) seeds throughout 2006.
