In the ever-evolving world of research and development, specialised in-home and alternate-site healthcare service firms have emerged as increasingly important constituents in the advancement and implementation of clinical trials. In order to maximise time and resources, drug manufacturers often outsource all or various functions of clinical trials to specialised firms. Outsourced functions commonly include training personnel, packaging and labelling shipments, and tracking and monitoring temperature sensitive materials while in transit.

Investigator site visits have always been a critical and necessary component of clinical trials; however, as service firms’ capabilities expand globally, samples can now be collected in the field, as opposed to the laboratory. By bringing clinical trials into patients’ homes through the use of qualified and trained home healthcare providers, these niche service firms increase patient recruitment, patient compliance and patient retention. Although this can lead to significant savings in time and money, it is not without tremendous obstacles and challenges.
