International Clinical Trials

ICSE, part of the CPhI Worldwide portfolio of leading pharmaceutical
events, is returning once again to offer pharma executives an
opportunity to source new suppliers, network and learn.
This year, ICSE and co-located events are being held at Feria de Madrid,
Spain, from 9th-11th October 2012. In addition to ICSE and CPhI, which
focus on pharma contract services and ingredients, there is P-MEC Europe
for pharma technology, equipment and machinery and InnoPack for pharma
packaging. Together, the shows cover every stage of the pharma value
chain, with exhibitors in every area from CMO to CRO, (pre-) clinical
trials through to pharma ingredients, technology and packaging.
The event has a genuinely global focus, attracting visitors and
exhibitors from all over the world. Last year’s event, held in
Frankfurt, Germany, attracted over 30,000 attendees and more than 2,200
exhibitors from over 140 countries.
All four shows are subdivided into zones, each dedicated to a different
area of expertise within the sector and designed to showcase its
distinct qualities. Zoning has been warmly received by attendees because
it makes the event easier to navigate and enables quick movement
between areas.
ICSE and co-located events are renowned within the pharma industry for
the audience they attract, even in comparison to other pharma-specifi c
events.
Past exhibitors have reported that having a stand at the event puts them
in front of senior commercial decision-makers, allowing them to forge
highly productive, longlasting business relationships face-to-face.
For the last few years, ICSE, CPhI and co-located events have hosted the
Innovation Awards, which recognise outstanding innovation among the
event’s exhibitors. This year, the scope of the awards has been
broadened, and they’ve been renamed accordingly, becoming the CPhI
Pharma Awards. The CPhI Pharma Awards feature three categories: Best
Innovation, Best Sustainable Packaging and Best Sustainable Stand
Design. Best Innovation recognises outstanding achievement in
pharmaceutical R&D, highlighting pioneers in new, commercially
scalable technologies.
Entry to the CPhI Pharma Awards is open to exhibitors at CPhI Worldwide,
ICSE, P-MEC Europe and InnoPack. The deadline for Best Innovation and
Best Sustainable Packaging is 10th August 2012, with Sustainable Stand
Design remaining open until 31st August. The shortlist will be announced
on 7th September, with presentations being held by shortlisted
exhibitors at the CPhI Speakers Corner on 9th October. Details of how to
enter can be found at www.cphi.com/pharma-awards.
Other new and returning features include: CPhI Global Meetings, a newly
launched ‘Match and Meet’ service for exhibitors and visitors; the
Pre-Connect conference on 8th October; Lunchtime Education sessions
during the show days; and the popular Speakers Corners in the ICSE –
proudly sponsored by Samedan Pharmaceutical Publishers Limited – CPhI
and InnoPack areas.
A custom-built mobile app is in development that will offer quick and
easy access to key information about the event. More details will be
published on the ICSE website (www.icsexpo.com) and via the various social media channels in due course.

Syringe siliconization
Gerresheimer AG
Ready-to-fill, i.e. sterile, prefillable glass syringes, are washed, siliconized, sterilized and packaged by the primary packaging manufacturer. They can then be filled by the pharmaceutical companies without any further processing. These days the majority of prefillable syringes are made of glass and the trend looks set to continue. The siliconization of the syringe barrel is an extremely important aspect of the production of sterile, prefillable glass syringes because the functional interaction of the glass barrel siliconization and the plunger stopper siliconization is crucial to the efficiency of the entire system. Both inadequate and excessive siliconization can cause problems in this connection. The use of modern technology can achieve an extremely uniform distribution of silicone oil in glass syringes with reduced quantities of silicone oil. Another option for minimizing the amount of free silicone oil in a syringe is the thermal fixation of the silicone oil on the glass surface in a process called baked-on siliconization. Plastic-based silicone oil-free or low-silicone oil prefillable syringe systems are a relatively new development. Silicone oil-free lubricant coatings for syringes are also currently in the development phase.
