Strategic Selection

Outsourcing in the clinical research industry continues to grow. Fifteen years ago, the top five global CROs employed 30,000 people. Now, in that group, over 100,000 individuals assist in thousands of clinical trials (1). In an era when new drug candidates are flowing into the clinical pipeline in record numbers, outsourcing is of increasing importance to the research industry. According to The Business Research Company, the global market for clinical trial services to biopharmaceutical and medical device companies is forecast to grow at 12% annually until 2021 Ė an acceleration from its increase of 10% in 2017, when its value became US $44.4 billion (2).

Multiple outsourcing models have developed to satisfy rising demand. Relationships range from full-service CROs to a variety of models with Š la carte sourcing of personnel and teams that specialise in particular functions or services. Sponsors can access highly skilled, individual consultants; augment their staff with a handful of additional lab technicians; or hire small to large functional units to fill gaps in their work capacity.

With so many choices, biopharma and biotechnology sponsors often elect to combine these options in a myriad of ways to best support their studies.

Bio/Pharmaceutical Methods: Do your Analytical Methods Hold Up to Regulatory Scrutiny?

Eurofins BioPharma Product Testing

As FDA guidelines evolve and drug products on the market begin to age, bio/pharmaceutical manufacturers face scrutiny of the original methods used to support these products. Therefore, manufacturers must re-evaluate these methods to ensure they comply with current FDA expectations. Some manufacturers are even facing consent decrees imposed by the agency requiring them to bring methods up to current standards within a specified timeframe. This exercise requires significant amounts of time and resources, which many manufacturers do not have since they are focused on getting their next products to market. For that reason, some clients have been turning to Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories for support.
