Pharma Takes Flight

“THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’...”

When Bob Dylan composed and recorded this song back in 1964, it quickly became an anthem for every disaffected youth with an axe to grind. Fast forward to 2009 and it would seem that Bob Dylan’s anthem for change might become a mantra suitable for the air cargo business, as the industry is experiencing unprecedented change that few anticipated.

For many years in this industry, general cargo was king. Auto parts, clothing, electronics, and other consumer products dominated what went on the aircraft. Speciality commodities were no more than a niche market or, in some cases, an afterthought. With the possible exception of perishables such as food, flowers and fish, the carriage of cold chain cargo experienced a minimal focus. Most sales and operational groups relished the prospect of the consistent volumes and minimal paperwork requirements garnered by general cargo, even if the yield was less than spectacular. In a word, it was easier. But in today’s air cargo climate, yields for general cargo have vaporised into thin air. An ongoing over-capacity situation has even spurred some of the more short-sighted airlines to move general freight for just the cost of surcharges, and there is no end in sight to the pricing madness. The days of ‘just put freight on the plane’ are gone, probably forever.
