The Benefits of 'Flexible Standardisation"

The current economic climate is spurring companies in all industries to pursue business transformations that will lead to both immediate cost savings and long-term strategic advantage. For pharmaceutical companies, one major opportunity to attain both these goals is in the improvement of supply chain operations.

Historically, pharmaceutical companies have not targeted their supply chain operations heavily for cost reductions, as regulatory compliance and customer satisfaction have typically taken priority. A recent Accenture survey found that the pharmaceutical industry lags behind other industries in its approach to the supply chain, and that many pharmaceutical companies are using relatively unsophisticated and ineffective techniques to manage key supply chain activities (1).

However, a number of pioneering companies in the industry who are seeking to become high-performance businesses are now targeting superior supply chain management as a strategic priority. In fact, more than half the industry respondents in the survey said that they consider the supply chain to be either a driver of operational excellence or an integral component of their organisationís competitive strategy.
