Master Glass

The process equipment of the pharmaceutical and chemical industries has so far been characterised by great similarity – especially in terms of glass lined reactors and components. However, the requirements on the production processes of these industries are quite different today. Two of the needs of the pharmaceutical industry are: increased purity in order to comply with the FDA and GMP requirements, and alternating alkali/acid operations during processing. The call for increased flexibility has been met with product process-specific equipment and novel glass development solutions tailored to the needs of manufacturing pharmaceutical products, vitamins and fine chemicals. These new glass properties contribute significantly to improved safety and efficiency of production processes.

New glass types specifically developed for pharmaceutical processing have brought about significant benefits to the industry over the past decade. Engineered to meet the FDA-validated active ingredient production requirements, the advent, for example, of pharma ‘light-blue’ glass has proved particularly well suited for watching the process inside the reactor. This optical addition to process monitoring offers very high contrast and excellent reflection of light for typically white pharmaceutical products. This can also assist with the verification of the cleaning result.
