Welcome to the World of Inhalation Technology

Readers with a long memory will recall that back in 1988 – when the first RDD meeting was held in Lexington, Kentucky – chlorofluorocarbons filled every pressurised inhaler, emptying of a well-known dry powder inhaler was evaluated using a domestic vacuum cleaner, and every nebuliser required compressed air to generate an aerosol.

Over 25 years of RDD meetings on three continents have documented the advances that have occurred since then, and provided a business-friendly venue at which innovative scientists have presented groundbreaking work. That legacy is available today in the online RDD archive of past publications (www.rddonline.com/publications), but some of the most recent work is presented in this special Inhalation Technology Supplement produced by PMPS.

This edition taps into the spirit of the RDD conferences: a curiosity about new technology, combined with practical advice on overcoming the challenges of a complex, but fascinating, industry.

Conference organisers from academia and business collaborate to ensure all RDD meetings are best in class. This shows in the organisation of the meetings which promote discussion and networking in comfortable surroundings. It is further apparent in the combined Scientific Poster Session and Technology Exhibition, which treats the youngest graduate student or start-up exactly the same as the seasoned internationally acclaimed scientist or multinational pharma company.

My colleagues and I listen to feedback. A request to feature more new presenters resulted in the creation of the signature Posters on the Podium sessions, at which the audience typically hears from five or six presenters in about an hour – no time wasting. A desire to have a more practically oriented, delegate-driven experience led Aptar Pharma, our collaborators of more than 10 years, to develop workshop sessions at European and Asian RDD meetings. Parallel, repeated programming allows delegates to choose what to see and when to see it. Time away from the office or lab is limited and it is essential to squeeze maximum value from the meeting experience.

If you stay in one place you get left behind, and you also miss a lot of talented people, exciting technologies and potential customers. After having attended the meeting in Arizona, US, you may also want to join us in Goa, India in November, and start planning for RDD Europe 2017 in Nice, France.

I hope you enjoy this supplement, and cordially invite you to attend an RDD meeting as an invited speaker, poster presenter, exhibitor, sponsor or delegate. Please visit www.rddonline.com/conferences to learn more.
