Regardless of the many medicines available for treating numerous conditions, a significant problem for healthcare systems worldwide is that patients often do not reliably take treatments as intended. Poor adherence is detrimental to both the patient and their doctor Ė the patientís wellbeing does not improve, which leads to further demands on healthcare professionals. Consequently, making medicines and medical devices more patient-centric has become a key objective for the industry.

Some of the main reasons for poor compliance are forgetfulness and a lack of understanding of the instructions, particularly for the elderly. As a result, many new patientcentric initiatives involve clearer directions and ways to remind the user to take their medicines.
