The Valley of Death

The “Valley of Death” is a term I learned early on in the pharmaceutical industry as a developer of new therapeutic compounds. It refers to that period when moving from compound discovery to early-stage development, including pre-clinical toxicology and safety pharmacology studies, and few sources of money are available to keep programmes alive and people paid. At any point, a project can fall apart due to toxicity, costs, inactivity against targets, or several other unforeseen events. You may save a lot of mice in your preclinical efficacy animal models, but will you save humans with a safe drug? That is the key question.
