Thinking Tech

Many online applications that are used daily implement machine-learning to offer a greater service. For example, Spotify collects data on trends in the music each user listens to. It uses this data to suggest songs and even generate entire playlists specifically for the user.

Machines learn in a similar way to humans, using past experiences to make decisions. They must initially be programmed with a set of parameters, which are then adjusted over time using the data collected, enabling them to give the best possible outcome. For example, Google Maps is programmed to give the fastest route for a journey based on the start and end location the user inputs. It then uses anonymised location data from smartphones to determine the speed of traffic and adjusts the route accordingly.

Pharmaceutical companies can also benefit from machine-learning technology (MLT) to improve the services they provide.
