The Future Is Now

Robotics, automation, software, and artificial intelligence (AI): they are no longer just science fiction. The once-imagined future is now here and affecting everything from fast food to pharmaceuticals.

Some McDonald’s restaurants have eliminated the need for cashiers by installing self-serve kiosks in selected locations that allow people to pick the menu item and pay for it on a screen. All one has to do is sit at the table with a number or go to a pick-up counter. However, keep in mind that robotics and automation are broad terms – we are not talking about the robot R2-D2 in Star Wars. Instead, a robot or automation refers to almost anything that has sensors and performs actions based upon specific programming. In the pharma world, it can range from clean rooms with environmental controls to management of toxic chemotherapy compounds to risky radioactive contamination, all of which are potentially hazardous situations that risk human life.
