Concurrently, biologics are becoming increasingly prevalent, which, due to their large volume and high viscosity, have proved challenging for traditional self-injection systems.

Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies have responded with an increased focus on wearable injection devices for subcutaneous drug delivery, often citing ease of use and patient centricity as the primary advantages over traditional syringes or infusion pumps. However, developing safe drug delivery systems that are user-friendly and encourage patient adherence to treatment routines entail a number of significant challenges.
