Serious Challenges, Great Opportunities

More and more pharmaceutical and healthcare products are transported each year, and, similarly, demands for faster reliable modes of transportation increase. Quite often, urgent needs occur in less developed regions or locations that are far away from production facilities or supply centres. The majority of these products are still transported by road and/or sea, which means that distribution to some destinations takes a long time. With the most sensitive or perishable products, this can develop problems risking the quality of delivered products, until they reach the hands of end users. Problems in the availability of medicines can lead to serious or fatal consequences, and long delivery times extend these risks. According to the 2019 Biopharma Cold Chain Logistics Survey, the biopharma industry loses approximately $35 billion annually as a result of failures in temperature-controlled logistics (1). The sensitive and perishable nature of pharma products requires fast and efficient transportation of shipments to where they are most needed, and air transportation offers that advantage. Air transport service providers are aware of the great potential of pharma air cargo, and they are investing in intelligent systems that help provide the most reliable and secure service for clients.
