Four Challenges for Pharma 4.0

The World Economic Forum (WEF) confirms we’re in an era of accelerated technological progress, characterised by innovations that will potentially change the nature of manufacturing across the globe and in every sector. According to Jennifer Markarian, Manufacturing Editor for Pharmaceutical Technology, the term ‘Pharma 4.0’ applies Industry 4.0 concepts to pharmaceutical manufacturing. This concept implies highly automated, smart, and adaptive equipment and facilities governed by a manufacturing control system integrating all parts of the manufacturing process with quality and business functions.

Pharma 4.0 – A Threat or an Opportunity?

Augmenting machines and advanced computing systems with wireless connectivity and sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) software promises to enhance predictive analytical capabilities, quality and process reliability, and datadriven decision making at all stages of the product lifecycle. Potentially, Pharma 4.0 could enable entire manufacturing systems to make decisions with minimal, or even no, human intervention. It sounds like a win all-round until you consider the human aspects of change.
