Converging Refrigeration Technologies Solutions to Environmental Legislation

Effective refrigeration is vital for the manufacture, storage, and logistics of a vast array of pharmaceutical products. However, as the world wakes up to the environmental impact of traditional refrigeration technologies and ever more stringent legislation is brought to bear, new refrigeration technologies can provide sustainable solutions, while offering game-changing energy efficiencies.

Refrigeration technology has been completely transformed over the last decade. The overriding reason for this transformation is the global realisation that traditional hydrofluorocarbon ‘F-gas’ refrigerants are a huge source of world pollution that has to be reduced dramatically. Developed nations have introduced aggressive legislation to reduce the supply of synthetic hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) fluorinated greenhouse gas (F-gas) refrigerants, such as R404A and R134A. The EU, especially, has led the world in reducing the consumption of highly polluting synthetic refrigerants. The EU F-gas legislation is summarised in EU legislation to control F-gases (1). F-gases are a group of chemicals containing fluorine, the most common of in use in Europe being HFCs, such as R134a, R404A, and R410A. Although they have a number of applications, the most common use is in refrigeration.
