Manufacturing Multi-Unit Drug Capsule Dosage Forms with Special Applications

Globally, the pharmaceutical industry is perennially changing. Continually, the industry comes up with solutions to meet therapeutic requirements, and, at other times, it brings about change and sets trends by introducing innovations and new platforms.

Solid dosage forms, one of the oldest and most widely used segments in medicines, have been constantly evolving for centuries. Mothes and Dublanc created a single-piece gelatine capsule in 1834. Later, a two-piece telescopic capsule was invented by James Murdock in London (1848). Ever since then, changes in therapeutic needs in healthcare and innovative technology have prompted the capsule dosage form to evolve significantly.

In order to produce these advanced capsule dosage forms, manufacturing capabilities must also constantly evolve. There is a growing need to innovate various capsule filler technologies to support the requirements of the industry to go beyond powder filling.

Ajit Kanetkar started his career in 1982 after completing a Masters in Pharmacy. He has over 35 years of experience including 20 years in pharma manufacturing in all dosage forms, especially sterile products and oral solid dosage forms. He has worked at Wockhardt, Cipla Group, Concept Pharma in India, and SM Pharma in Malaysia. Ajit has been with ACG Engineering for almost 15 years, in which he was working extensively for eight years on introducing and promoting fluid bed processing technology all across India. He now provides technical support to ACG group companies and coordinates technical seminars and training programmes for customers in India and across the world.

Milind Chavanis Product Manager at ACG Engineering. Milind has over 11 years of experience in product management, customer services, and design with a focus on pharma and nutritional manufacturing technologies. He has engaged in several new product developments on oral solid dose encapsulation systems in capsule. Milind graduated in 2007 from Mumbai University, India, with a degree in Production Engineering, and in 2016 completed a Post Graduate Degree in Management from Jamanalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.
