Agile Adaptation

As the initial impacts of COVID-19 start to recede, manufacturers are looking at their supply chains to see what changes need to be made to prepare for the future. This is especially true for the pharmaceutical supply chain as the challenges it traditionally faces have only been amplified in more than a year of disruption. The big question is how to shift from building resiliency into supply chains to respond rapidly to disruptions, to having the agility to take advantage of opportunities and better outpace competition. As well as differentiating through improved customer excellence, new product introduction, and maximising the potential of supply chains.

Pharmaceutical companies have experienced drug shortages, cost increases, and delivery performance degradation. Couple that with mandates by regulatory bodies requiring jurisdictional control, the continuing focus on inventory as the sole and low-risk form of agility, and the adoption of technology that does not support end-to-end supply chain collaboration.

What companies have learned from 2020 is that the more agility used to counter volatility, the less relevant accuracy is. Ultimately, it is a case of finding the right balance and being able to respond quickly to fast-changing scenarios. In line with this, companies are setting specific goals to meet their internal objectives for better customer service, profitability, and growth, focusing in particular on enhanced innovation, agility, and speed.
