The Best Candidate of Primary Containers for Biologics and Cell and Gene Therapies



There are some problems with the existing primary containers. For example, glass suffers from breakage, delamination, etc., and plastic doesn’t have sufficient oxygen and UV barrier. Especially in glass, the FDA used to point out such problems and reports a number of recalls every year. To address these problems, suppliers launched plastic vials and syringes, but the oxygen barrier has not yet met customer demands. Under these circumstances, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (MGC) has developed multilayer plastic vials and syringes with excellent oxygen and UV barriers.

The multilayer plastic vial and syringe, OXYCAPT™, consists of three layers. The inner and outer layers are made of cyclo olefin polymer (COP), which is one of the most reliable polymers in pharma industry, and the middle layer is made of new polyester developed by MGC. Because of the COP’s characteristics, the products are equipped with a high water vapour barrier, very low extractables, high pH stability, low protein adsorption, high break resistance, etc. The new polyester, with excellent oxygen and UV properties, is an essential aspect of the barrier layer.

MGC can offer bulk vials, ready-to-use (RTU) vials, and RTU syringes. Regarding the RTU products, vials and syringes are provided in ISO-based nest and tub formats.
