The method by which drugs enter the body, and the rate at which their active ingredients are released, are crucial in the pharmaceutical, personal care and health care industries. Drug delivery systems fall into five broad categories: oral, transdermal, pulmonary, parenteral and mucosal. These release characteristics can now be measured accurately and easily through texture analysis, which is now emerging as a key technique for quality control in the pharmaceutical sector. Texture analysis techniques can be used at all stages of the manufacturing process, including research and development, ingredient selection, production and packing.
