In 2003, the UK pharmaceutical industry recorded a trade surplus of £ 3.6 billion. This means that, in trade terms, pharmaceuticals are now worth almost as much to the UK economy as North Sea oil (1). According to the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), pharmaceutical companies exported ?11,926 million worth of medicines (compared to ?10,185 million in 2002), thus making the pharmaceuticals sector the third most profitable UK exporter (1). This has had an explosive impact in the industry, forcing associated sectors and the corresponding regulation to evolve to keep pace. One application that has undergone dramatic developments over the past few years is the coding and marking of both pharmaceutical packaging and the tablets themselves.
On 25th February 2004, the FDA published the final version of the 21 CFR Parts 201, 606 and 610, which has been produced in order to reduce the number of medication errors in hospitals and health care settings. This rule specifies that certain human drug and biological product labels that contain linear bar codes must include the national drug code (NDC) number. This is so that health care professionals can use bar code scanning equipment to verify that the right drug, in the right dose and via the right route of administration, is being given to the right patient at the right time. The FDA ruling cites a figure of US$177 billion for the direct cost to the US economy of adverse incidents arising from medication errors (2). 21 CFR Parts 201, 606 and 610
