Overt Brand Protection and Authentication Measures to Combat Drug Counterfeiting

The burning problem in India, and indeed globally, is the problem of 'spurious' drugs. A number of stories on illegitimate drugs appear in the press and much debate and discussion is taking place in government circles and industry forums. These drugs are a danger to society and government agencies, and the industry is rightly worried about the spread of spurious drugs all over the world.

This article is not concerned with stories on 'spurious' drugs - since enough has been written about this - but about the security technologies that are available to combat this menace. The business of spurious drugs in India, according to one report, is said to account for 20 per cent of the pharmaceutical turnover and, though no accurate figures are possible at a global level, one estimate puts the figure at $20 billion. Even if you assume that the figures are exaggerated, even a fraction of the above figure is a matter of grave concern.

Most pharmaceutical products, such as tablets, capsules and liquid orals, vials and ampoules, are easy to copy into perfect imitations of the original product. The spurious drug business requires very little capital investment as the products are very simple to make and have very low production technologies. The skill and knowledge that the counterfeiters have in making copies have improved to such an extent in recent times that it is even difficult for company personnel to distinguish the genuine article from the fake.
