Best Practice for Cool Chain Management: A Matter of Synergies

What is 'best practice' for an effective and compliant cool chain, when it comes to the shipments of pharmaceuticals? This article reflects on the role of the air freight carrier, which goes way beyond transportation tout court and which must be viewed in the context of developing a proper logistic concept in synergy with all the parties involved.

It is common knowledge that transportation is the weakest link in the supply chain and that constant and accurate temperature control is the most crucial factor in order to avoid diminishing the final quality of pharmaceutical and biotech products and, therefore, posing a potential risk to patient health. Although damage can occur at each point along the supply chain, statistics confirm that most results from breakdowns in the cool chain and/or from poor handling. Seen in this light, it is clear that the role of the air freight carrier is vital.

Relying on sophisticated technology, such as state-of-the-art containers, as well as employing well-trained, reliable staff, are two essential preconditions for the air freight company to achieve effective and compliant transportation of temperature sensitive products. Nevertheless, the cool chain is not simply a question of transportation, but is realised following the right combination of different activities, such as packaging, cooling procedures and handling processes, in addition to land and air freight services.

4th Annual Patient Recruitment and Retention in Clinical Trials

13-15 October 2008, Amsterdam

Patient recruitment is now consuming thirty percent of clinical trial time - more time than any other clinical trial activity - and almost half of all trial delays result from patient recruitment problems. As the recruiting culture becomes more sophisticated and the forces affecting patient enrollment grow more numerous and complex, pharmaceutical companies are striving to discover new strategies to facilitate enrollment in clinical trials. With increasing industry pressure to develop, test and market greater numbers of new drugs faster, pharmaceutical companies need to perform clinical trials as quickly as possible. Inefficient patient recruitment processes is a formidable barrier to pharmaceutical companies' success in launching new products. Improving the patient recruitment process is imperative to avoid wasted investments and eliminate costly delays in bringing new drugs to market -- today and even more so in the not-so-distant future. Improved patient recruitment presents one of the largest opportunities for pharmaceutical companies to eliminate delays in clinical trials, thereby making it possible to reduce time to market.  With patent time limits and large overheads meaning that any delays in the development timeline can be disastrous, a good understanding of how to successfully recruit patients for trials is vital for any company looking to succeed.
