Trends in Pharmaceutical Packaging

Over the last year we have carried out a survey of pharmaceutical market leaders, across America and Europe, on the industry's requirements for packaging lines. In this article, I will look at some of the results of this survey, future developments and trends in the pharmaceutical sector and the implications for packaging machinery.

The pharmaceutical packaging market is constantly advancing and is expected to experience annual growth of at least four per cent, to US$18.2 billion, by 2005. As with most other packaged goods, the combined concerns of profitability and product protection means that pharmaceuticals need trouble-free and speedy packaging solutions. Constant innovations in the pharmaceuticals themselves also have a direct impact on the packaging.

Bernard C Fenner is Vice President of Marketing at SIG Pack Systems, Switzerland. He has been with the company for more than nine years and is responsible for strategic marketing and leads the Pharma Management Group. Before taking over the marketing department in 2001, he was Product Manager and, prior to this, Head of Logistics. Bernard is a graduate of the School of Engineering of the University of Basel, Switzerland and has a BS in Production Engineering. He went on to receive a BS in Industrial Engineering from the School of Engineers in Zurich.
